Regulate a safer, greener future

About us

We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment. Acting to reduce the impacts of a changing climate on people and wildlife has never been more crucial, and it’s the overarching goal at the heart of everything we do. We’re responsible for regulating the disposal of radioactive waste across the whole of the nuclear industry in England, and our Senior Regulators work with Nuclear Operators to ensure the highest levels of environmental protection are achieved.

About the role

As a Senior Nuclear Regulator, you’ll be at the forefront of this work. From new builds to legacy waste, radiological monitoring and assessment to radiation incident management, you’ll work collaboratively with a team tackling multiple programmes and projects for the good of the environment. Alongside your team, you’ll use the latest scientific information to develop guidance and systems for monitoring discharges, modelling radioactivity in the environment, and producing tools for assessing the potential impact on people and the environment.

Acting as a source of expertise, you’ll provide technical input and evidence to support radiological monitoring and assessment, site regulation, decommissioning, and radiation incident management. You’ll evaluate, compare, contextualise and interpret monitoring results, working with other regulators and stakeholders to develop and maintain guidance and systems. Everything you do will put people and places first, and you’ll work in a cross-function capacity to support initiatives across our Nuclear Regulatory Group.

About you

An established professional educated to degree level in a relevant subject, you’ll have significant experience of radiological monitoring and/ or monitoring and assessment. With excellent knowledge of the nuclear sector and modern environmental challenges, you’ll be highly technically competent on a range of issues, including radioactivity, radionuclide properties, environmental behaviour and analytical methods. You’ll have Programme Management experience and competency in data management and manipulation.

On a personal level, you’ll be an effective communicator with honed influencing skills and a passion for environmental issues. The work we do increases access to nature, tackles climate change head on, and keeps the public safe. It also sets careers on unstoppable trajectories. Join us, and get excellent benefits, unrivalled career development opportunities, and a team dedicated to putting the planet first.
