Physics and astronomy have been taught in Preston for over 190 years, by the University of Central Lancashire and its precursors, starting with the Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge in 1828.  Today, the Jeremiah Horrocks Institute at UCLan is a vibrant community of students and researchers working on a wide range of topics within physics, astrophysics, and mathematics.

MSc by Research

You will participate in the day-to-day activity of an active research group, completing a research project that has been designed by you in collaboration with the group leader. You will use the latest world-class equipment to perform research in your chosen topic, with personal guidance from one of our world-leading academic staff.

MSc Nanoscience and Nanotechnology

The course has been designed, by the Physics and Chemistry team, to include input from industry from the outset. Delivered by world leaders in their respective fields, it is an exploration of the burgeoning field of nanoscience, and will set you in good stead for an eventual career in a physics/chemistry/nanoscience field.

Physics and astronomy have been taught continuously in Preston for more than 190 years; and we trace our heritage back to Jeremiah Horrocks who made the first prediction, and subsequent observation, of the Transit of Venus, in 1639.

We pride ourselves on our small class sizes, which allow us to get to know our students, and them us, offering a unique level of support throughout the degree.  Another benefit of small class sizes is that we are able to offer bespoke final-year research projects to every student, supervized by research-active experts in the relevant field.

You will learn by a variety of methods including lectures, tutorials, seminars, problem-solving classes, laboratory work, observatory experiments, individual project work and group work.

Training and development
Specialist laboratory facilities include nuclear physics, mechanics, optics, nanophysics and laser physics, and for astrophysics, our very own Alston Observatory, which boasts one of the largest teaching telescopes in the UK.

Our year-one syllabus, common across courses, gives you the flexibility to transfer to other specialist courses in the second year. You can find your niche in physics, physics with astrophysics, or astrophysics, and study to either BSc or MPhys level. This approach to teaching and learning led 93% of students to express satisfaction with the quality of our courses on the most recent National Student Survey (2022).

Career prospects
All of our on-campus courses in physics and astrophysics are accredited by the Institute of Physics (IOP), with completion leading towards Chartered Physicist (CPhys) status. Graduate IOP members can use the letters MInstP after their name. Our BSc(Hons) in astronomy is recognized by the IOP and all graduates automatically meet requirements for its Associate Membership.

Industrial placements are available as an extra sandwich year in any undergraduate or postgraduate programme. We also offer paid summer internships to work with our research groups. Many of our graduates go on to further study, such as MSc degrees in a range of topics in physics and engineering. We also provide PhD scholarships to work with our world-leading researchers.
