Overall Purpose of the Job

QinetiQ works in partnership with Defence, Government and Critical National Infrastructure to enhance the ability to operate safely and securely across the Cyber and Electromagnetic environment. We are looking for Senior System Engineers capable of directing a multi-disciplined team, or as part of a larger team.

You will be applying your knowledge, skills and experience of structured engineering methods to a wide range of programmes to enhance operational advantage and increase resilience in Cyber and Electro-Magnetic Activities (CEMA) through:

  • Research and prototyping  into generation after next technologies;
  • Requires elicitation, design, development and integration of solutions;
  • Testing, evaluation and exercising of systems, capabilities and organisations.

The work may be in direct support of our customer(s), embedded as a technical subject matter expert within their team; or leading a QinetiQ delivering solutions/products for our customers.

We welcome candidates with a broad range of Systems Engineering and Architectural experience across CEMA, including: Cyber Security, Cyber Vulnerabilities Electronic Attack, Electronic Defence, Electronic Warfare, Cyber and Electronic Surveillance, CEMA trials and exercises.

Key Accountabilities

  • Leading the technical direction and delivery of project outcomes/outputs;
  • Managing a diverse array of stakeholders;
  • Tailoring and applying systems engineering approaches and architectural methodologies to capture and design customer solutions;
  • Working across complex internal and external team boundaries to solve problems;
  • Presenting of technical outputs, appropriate to the audience’s knowledge and expertise, in both written and presentational formats;
  • Supporting both bid and project teams in the development of solutions to customer problems;
  • Collaborating across QinetiQ and Customer project teams to enhance the end-solution;
  • Identification of opportunities for follow on work and supporting their pursuit and bidding from a technical perspective.

  • Dealing with complexity within an evolving technical and programme landscape;
  • Rapidly assimilating information, understanding the latest situation and translating this into solutions for customers;
  • Working with multidisciplinary teams that may be drawn from across the stakeholder’s organisations.

Person Specification

  • Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required;
  • Knowledge and experience working in the Cyber and/or Electromagnetic domains for Defence, Government and/or Critical National Infrastructure related projects;
  • Ability to elicit, articulate and manage customer needs and system requirements, and translate these into operational, logical and physical architectures representing the enterprise;
  • Defining or undertaking assurance (i.e. pan-DLOD V&V) activities for MOD and/or Government capabilities;
  • Coordinating, supporting and chairing design reviews to ensure adherence to customer and corporate standards and governance;
  • Project/engineering planning to ensure all aspects of the engineering life cycle are considered from the outset;
  • Creation and leadership of multi-disciplined technical teams to support project outcomes;
  • Selection and tailoring of engineering lifecycles to support capability delivery in a cost-effective and efficient manner.

Essential Education, Qualifications and Training

  • Degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering or technical discipline, or proven experience working in an equivalent engineering role;
  • Intention to join/membership of appropriate professional body.

  • Well-developed oral, written communication and presentation skills;
  • Can adapt and work flexibly;
  • Can work on several projects simultaneously.
