Qioptiq Photonics Limited (An Excelitas Technologies Company) is a leading global supplier of opto-electronics and photonic products present in a variety of markets from medical and biotechnology to semiconductor and industrial markets, based in Hamble, Hampshire.

Main Tasks

  • Design laser products in detail using a variety of laser technologies to meet specifications;
  • Propose conceptual designs;
  • Work with multi-disciplinary team to ensure optical design is robust;
  • Expand personal knowledge base as required by projects;
  • Detailed design of optical systems including system performance, components and materials selection, thermal considerations, optical design and opto-mechanical stability;
  • Investigate tolerances and write specifications for systems;
  • Optical system design within customer restrictions and with design for manufacture considerations;
  • Design, build and characterize prototypes and proof-of-concept experiments;
  • Select and/or design optical components to achieve customer requirements;
  • Hands on development of designs through alpha, beta and pilot production phase. Including supporting NPI with early production batches;
  • Provide technical expertise to projects and/or take the role of Technical Lead.

General

  • Energize projects and drive projects to completion within agreed plan & budget;
  • Observe company procedures & processes;
  • Manage time and effort applied to projects in accordance with deadlines and priority levels;
  • Manage project technical risks and create solutions to overcome barriers to project success;
  • Communicate deviations or risks with project plan or goals to Project Manager;
  • Identify and propose improvements to performance, reliability and cost of our products & processes.

Support

  • Provide technical solutions, training and technical support to other departments as required;
  • Support for Production and Production Engineering teams;
  • Write manufacturing work instructions, test procedures and documentation;
  • Respond to sales enquiries and orders.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A Masters in Physics;
  • Solid experience in precision optics, lasers and optical fibres;
  • Experience in optical setup design;
  • Knowledge and practical experience of relevant measurement techniques and instrumentation;
  • Problem solving & lateral thinking skills;
  • Good verbal and written communication skills appropriate to a highly technical environment;
  • Computer literate:

            - Excel – Advanced;

            - Word – Intermediate;

            - PowerPoint – Intermediate;

            - Coding (e.g. Matlab/Python) - Beginner.
