Job Details

Basel-Freiburg Center for Quantum Science and Quantum Computing QSC

EUCOR – The European Campus

The Center for Quantum Science and Quantum Computing (QSC) of the Universities of Basel (Switzerland) and Freiburg (Germany), embedded in EUCOR – The European Campus, invites applications for two Georg H. Endress Postdoc Fellowships at the University of Freiburg (Germany) to start in 2023. The Center seeks to attract outstanding young talents to engage in cutting-edge projects involving the research groups present at Basel and Freiburg. The ideal Georg H. Endress Fellow has just finished a PhD in experimental or theoretical physics (or related areas), is of the highest caliber of intellectual achievement, and is eager to shape the academic environment in research and teaching at both nodes. Fellows will be appointed for three years, and will be selected by the GHE Committee on the basis of scientific excellence demonstrated at an early-career stage, as well as quality and creativity of the proposed research in the QSC target areas. The Fellows enjoy full independence in selection and focus of research direction within the two nodes throughout their three-year fellowship term, with the intention of bridging and combining activities in the two nodes. Areas of research include quantum information processing (quantum computation, simulation, and metrology), in particular also with spins and other qubit platforms, quantum sensing, quantum technologies, complex quantum systems, topological systems, quantum materials, and other emerging topics in quantum science, both in experiment and theory.

The Georg H. Endress Postdoc Cluster at the Basel-Freiburg Center for QSC on EUCOR – The European Campus – is a dedicated ten-year initiative to foster and educate outstanding young scientists to provide the academic talent and technology skills for the rapidly developing field of QSC. The Georg H. Endress Fellows will complement and expand the present strategic strengths in research at the Center. In previous calls, the Center has already appointed 23 Fellows and is now opening a 5th call aiming to appoint two new Fellows at the University of Freiburg (Germany).

We are aiming broadly at the 2nd generation of quantum technologies, exploring control of the quantum properties of elementary building blocks, and of their orchestrated interaction, to enhance targeted functional properties upon integration. The University of Basel hosts the Swiss research initiative NCCR SPIN on spin quantum computation.

Applications contain the candidate’s CV and a short (up to two pages) research statement describing the studies he or she would like to pursue while a Fellow, in one pdf document. Furthermore, candidates are requested to arrange for two confidential letters of reference, which need to bear the author’s institutional letterhead and (digital) signature. Applications and letters shall be submitted online, via https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/21910. Women and minority scientists are particularly encouraged to apply.

Further information for applicants can be found here.

The application deadline is May 31st, 2023. Applications will continue to be accepted and evaluated until the positions are filled. For information, please visit https://www.eucor-uni.org/g-h-e-postdoc-cluster/ or contact us on endress-fellows@unibas.ch.
