We invite applications for a Lecturer (Teaching & Research) in the Department of Physics whose research is in experimental Sustainable Technology for large scale research infrastructures or related areas.

Our Department was ranked 9th in the UK for Physics research outputs and 7th for the quality of our research environment in REF2021. We have an excellent track record in the development of novel technologies, including sensors and detectors and our research clusters are developing next-generation solutions to reduce the carbon footprint and environmental impact of our research. Our academic staff hold important leadership roles in many world-class fundamental science experiments and they are driving technology innovations that benefit society.

Our current activities in experimental sustainable technologies include work on energy recovery linacs, with cross-cluster collaboration between accelerator and particle physicists working for future projects such as PERLE, development of green technologies such as energy saving magnets for accelerators, and light sources technology applied to condensed matter physics research. Among our key strategic partners are Daresbury Laboratory, CERN, Saclay, ESRF and Diamond. You will be based in the most suitable research cluster.

We are looking for candidates who will work closely with our strategic partners and help make current and future large-scale experiments more sustainable, meeting the challenges of the 21st century. We would particularly welcome candidates who:

  • Have an emerging or existing track record in experimental sustainable technology, including sensors and detectors, computing, magnets for accelerators, light sources technology, energy recovery linacs, or related areas;
  • Have demonstrated the ability to attract research funding;
  • Have a passion for teaching and gained initial experience in PhD and undergraduate student supervision.

You will be expected to teach a range of lectures, laboratory classes and tutorials. Exact teaching duties as well as the most appropriate grade within the advertised range will be agreed on the basis of background, experience and ability.

You will have a PhD in Physics or a related discipline.

The School of Physical Sciences is an Athena SWAN Silver Award holder and the Department of Physics was awarded Juno Practitioner status by the IOP. We are working to create an inclusive environment which values a diverse workforce and we recognise that many individuals value flexibility in their work/life balance. Therefore, this post may be taken up on a part-time (a minimum of 0.5 FTE) or full-time basis (including a job share).

We strongly encourage applications from individuals from groups underrepresented within our workforce, particularly women and people who identify as Black, Asian or from a Minority Ethnic background. There is no obligation to declare an interest in a part-time or flexible position in the application or at interview. This may be addressed after the selection process.
