Job Description

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to perform scientific research in a National Laboratory setting using various experimental and numerical techniques to measure and characterize the detonation performance of energetic materials. Work will be conducted in the High Explosives Applications Facility (HEAF) and, occasionally, in other experimental facilities at LLNL and various DOE user facilities. You will engage with a multi-disciplinary team involved in a wide range of research topics. This position is in the Materials Performance team within the Energetic Materials Group of the Materials Science Division.

In this role you will

• Design and execute advanced experiments to measure the detonation properties of energetic materials.
• Apply physics-based analytical methods to gain insights into experimental data.
• Communicate experimental results to modelers/analysts and integrate data with modeling.
• Pursue independent, complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
• Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
• Maintain and establish laboratory protocols.
• Document research; write and publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community, at working group meetings, and at conferences.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering or related fields.
• Ability to work in a laboratory environment to perform complex experiments.
• Ability to assimilate and interpret data by application of advanced analysis techniques.
• Knowledge of and ability to work with energetic materials.
• Ability to become a qualified explosives handler.
• Ability to develop independent research projects through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
• Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in effective presentations at seminars, meetings and/or teaching lectures.
• Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Qualifications We Desire

• Knowledge/background in shock/detonation physics.
• Experience with advanced experimental diagnostics.
• Familiarity with hydrodynamic simulations and basic programming skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB, etc.).

Position Information

This is a Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years, open to those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
