Pay Range

$36.50 - $47.28 Hourly for the 502.2 level

$43.78 - $56.70 Hourly for the 502.3 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for a Nuclear Material Control and Accountability (MC&A) Measurement Technologist. You will provide general to advanced technical support for MC&A non-destructive assay (NDA) measurements and analysis in radiological facilities with elevated safety and security requirements. This position is direct funded through the Security Organization by NNSA NA-70 and is part of the MC&A Group within the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Provide general technical support to troubleshoot and diagnose moderately complex technical problems with instrumentation and resolve measurement anomalies.
  • Execute and provide feedback for procedures and job aids.
  • Assist in repair and maintenance of NDA instruments.
  • Participate in National Training Center (NTC) and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) certification courses in nuclear material NDA measurement techniques for MC&A (including gamma spectroscopy, neutron, and calorimetric methods).
  • Interpret MC&A NDA measurement data and perform basic statistical analysis of measurement system data to verify systems are operating within measurement control.
  • Obtain knowledge of MC&A requirements and processes to interface between MC&A and programmatic users and nuclear material custodians.
  • Administer Scale & Balance and test weight certified calibrations and Accountable Nuclear Material Inventory programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Additional job responsibilities, at the 502.3 level

  • Train personnel in the use of MC&A NDA measurement equipment.
  • Obtain certification in MC&A operations through the Technical Qualification Program (TQP).
  • Participate in establishing a nuclear material holdup measurement program.


Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Associate degree in a scientific field or environmental technology or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Experience using standard computer applications for database entry, result calculation, and report generation.
  • Skills and knowledge sufficient to meet prerequisites for NTC certified MC&A courses (e.g., nuclear material control, accounting, and inventory) and TQP certification.
  • Ability to perform On-the-Job Training (OJT) instruction with intermediate technical skills, knowledge, and abilities related to operation of MC&A NDA instrumentation.
  • Ability to administer Scale and Balance and test weight certified calibration program.
  • Ability to conduct accountable nuclear material inventories in multiple areas to meet assigned schedule and federal requirements.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability and enthusiasm for working as part of a team.


Additional qualifications at the 502.3 level

  • Significant related experience to perform independently with advanced technical ability and participate in specialized training.
  • Ability to provide MC&A NDA measurement technical leadership for portable NDA instruments.
  • Ability to develop Nondestructive Assay measurement models for nuclear material holdup measurements.


Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with Microsoft Excel macros (i.e., Visual Basic), and/or other scripting tools.
  • Knowledge of NDA techniques.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
