Are you interested in developing world class accelerators for the UK’s future research needs where you are able to lead, coordinate and deliver full scale projects from start to end?

STFC’s Accelerator Science and Technology Centre (ASTeC) undertakes particle accelerator research for current and future ‘Big Science’ facilities and is based at Daresbury Laboratory.

We have experience in designing, commissioning and operating particle accelerators, with an emphasis on developing designs for national research facilities. We work on numerous high-profile projects with other STFC departments, national partners such and with international labs such as CERN, DESY and PSI.

We are looking for a permanent Accelerator Scientist within the Accelerator Physics Group to develop a national/international leadership role in the development of electron accelerators for synchrotron radiation production and free-electron lasers. The primary responsibilities for this role is to organise and contribute to the ongoing operation and development of CLARA.

You will also have the opportunity to develop a leadership role in a suitable area of accelerator science within the overall goals of our Centre, and to gain experience in other accelerator science and computational topics relevant to our mission. There will be opportunities to work collaboratively with our UK and overseas collaborators including opportunity for international travel and overseas experimental working.

Person Specification:

  • PhD in a relevant subject (e.g. physics) or equivalent research or scientific experience (S)
  • Sound understanding of electrodynamics or electromagnetic radiation physics (S&I)
  • Practical or experimental experience in physics or an engineering field (S&I)
  • A track record of project delivery (S&I)
  • Broader knowledge of accelerator technical systems (S&I)
  • Knowledge of health and safety management and/or working in a radiation environment. (S&I)
