Job Details

Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie (HZB) investigates and develops materials for a sustainable energy supply of the future. For this purpose, we operate the synchrotron facility BESSY II as well as several core labs for investigating materials. BESSY II attracts users from all over the world with its unique experimental facilities. With approx. 1,200 employees, HZB is today one of the largest non-university research centres in Berlin. More information: www.helmholtz-berlin.de

SCIENCE + CAREER + DIVERSITY = HZB
... is the formula for our successful human resources policy. We offer wide-ranging internal and external qualification opportunities for our employees, including special support for junior scientists. Our family-friendly workplace policy includes flexible working hours and telework arrangements. HZB values diversity as driver for successful scientific collaborative work and promotes a supportive working atmosphere for people from all backgrounds.

Postdoctoral Research Scientist (f/m/d) for the exploration of crystal and magnetic structures of quantum magnets and strongly correlated electron systems

Reference No.: QM 2021/11

The Institute of Quantum Phenomena in Novel Materials undertakes world-leading research in quantum and frustrated magnetism, multi-functional materials and superconductivity. As well as operating several end-stations at the BESSY II synchrotron, it also offers a state-of-the-art materials synthesis program and the full range of materials characterization facilities including X-ray Laue and powder diffraction, magnetization, heat capacity and transport measurements.

As a research scientist, your primary goal is to explore the crystal and magnetic structures of new quantum magnets and strongly correlated electron systems using X-ray and neutron diffraction. These materials will also be investigated using methods such as magnetization and specific heat to determine their phase diagrams as a function of e.g. temperature, magnetic field and pressure.

Your tasks

  • Determination of the crystal structure of new materials from powder and single crystal samples
  • Investigation of their magnetic structures using X-ray and neutron diffraction
  • Exploration of their phase diagrams as a function of temperature, magnetic field and pressure, using physical properties measurements (e.g. magnetization, susceptibility, heat capacity)
  • Performance of complementary experiments such as inelastic neutron scattering and muon spectroscopy
  • Evaluation of the experimental results, data analysis and comparison of experimental data to theoretical models

Your profile

  • PhD specializing in condensed matter physics or chemistry
  • Good knowledge in the field of solid state physics and/or chemistry is essential
  • Knowledge of X-ray and neutron scattering diffraction methods is important
  • Experience of measuring and analyzing magnetic and other bulk physical properties is useful
  • Ability to work in a team

What we offer

  • You will be part of an international team at a renowned research organization that provides access to state-of-the-art research infrastructure and promotes networking and exchange within the Helmholtz Association and beyond,
  • A postdoc office that supports you in achieving your career goals,
  • Work-life balance, flexible working hours, mobile working,
  • Opportunities for professional development through in-house and external programs,
  • Health management and company sports facilities.

Fixed term contract for 24 months. The salary is based on the Collective Agreement for the German Public Service (TVöD-Bund).

How to apply

In addition to your full application (cover letter, CV, copies of academic certificates) please send us the contact details of at least two references. We look forward to receiving your application via our application management system by 19.11.2021. For reasons of data protection regulations, we are unfortunately unable to consider applications that reach us by email or by mail in the application process.

We strive to increase the proportion of female employees and are therefore particularly pleased to receive applications from women. Disabled applicants with equal aptitude are given preference.
