Instrument Scientist

Salary: £31,931 to £44,166 per annum (dependent on skills and experience).
Location: Science and Technology Facilities Council, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Harwell, Oxfordshire.

We are looking for a highly motivated and independent full-time scientist to join our ISIS Neutron and Muon Source instrument team, supporting and developing the science and instrumentation programs. This is an excellent opportunity for someone to work with our outstanding instruments, whilst also being given the opportunity to focus on their own research.

About the Role

The main aspect of the role will involve working on and developing our Vesuvio instrument, a unique neutron spectrometer that supports science ranging from fundamental physics to chemistry and materials science. Within this role, you will also gain exposure to our other instruments and will provide integral support to our user community.

We are looking for someone with the communications skills to interact effectively with our visitors from higher education institutions as well as from industry. You will work alongside and train these visitors to perform experiments and assist with data analysis and interpretation, and publication of results. You will also have the opportunity to develop both collaborative and personal scientific research programmes.

We are looking for someone with:

  • A curiosity about neutron Compton scattering, transmission and diffraction, that concurrently employ a wide, thermal-to-epithermal incident neutron energy range.
  • A PhD or equivalent in condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, materials science, chemistry or similar.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work closely with our users and partner, with great presentation skills for delivering science updates.

Employee Benefits:

We are offering a permanent position that will also give you a wealth of opportunities for learning and development within your field. Additionally, we provide a whole host of employee benefits including; 30 days holiday (in addition to bank holidays), an excellent pension scheme, employee shopping/travel discounts, a salary sacrifice cycle to work scheme, plus many more benefits and wellbeing initiatives that enable our employees to have an excellent work-life balance.

STFC imageAt the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), research is driven by practical applications and a curiosity to create a world-leading hub of scientific and engineering excellence. Our science and facilities enable researchers to answer fundamental questions about the nature of the universe. Success typically requires long-term strategic investment, international collaboration on a global scale and the capability to push the limits of technology and engineering. To remain internationally competitive in our areas of science and to keep our facilities at the leading edge, we have to develop bespoke technology that cannot be reliably sourced on the open market, for example in detectors and instrumentation, accelerators, specialist engineering, optics and e-infrastructure. These technologies are often also applied to address broader societal and industrial challenges and we actively promote their translation and commercialization.

Why work for us
When you join STFC, you become a key part of one of Europe’s largest research organizations. We are trusted to support, enable, and undertake cutting-edge projects in an amazing diversity of fields that you could be a part of. With access to our world-class facilities, people like you are helping us to drive ground-breaking advances in science, engineering, computing and technology.
