Job Details

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL, https://www.lbl.gov/) Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics (ATAP, https://atap.lbl.gov/) Division has an opening for a Deputy of Applications and Projects, at the Physicist Staff Scientist or Physicist Senior Scientist level, to join the BELLA Center team.

In this role, you will be responsible for leading and developing applications of emerging advanced laser-based accelerator technologies within the Berkeley Lab Laser Accelerator (BELLA) Center.This includes the development and integration of high-average power, ultra-short-pulse laser technology and plasma-based accelerator systems. As high-repetition rate (kHz) lasers with sufficient intensity to drive laser-plasma accelerators emerge, new controls, instrumentation, diagnostics, and methods must be developed to apply these lasers to advanced accelerator systems. Compact high-average power accelerator systems will enable applications using compact sources of radiation (from THz to gamma rays) and particles (electrons, positrons, protons, ions, and muons) for science, security, and industry.  This position will lead and coordinate the current projects on the application of laser-plasma accelerators as well as develop future project opportunities.

The Deputy of Applications and Projects will serve as a member of the leadership team of the BELLA Center, working closely with ATAP Division management. You will build collaborative relationships with other Divisional and Laboratory programs, as well as collaborations outside of LBNL, both domestically and internationally. This position will lead a team of scientists, engineers, and technicians. Project work is a key component in this position, and the successful candidate will lead current projects and also collaborations that underlie future project opportunities.

This position will work collaboratively with BELLA Center and ATAP scientists, engineers, postdocs, technicians, and students, document and communicate results of work in peer-reviewed journal publications and oral presentations, and participate in meetings, conferences, and reviews.

What You Will Do:

  • Provide leadership for BELLA Center applications and projects, including the involved personnel (scientists, postdoctoral fellows, professional staff, affiliates, and students);
  • Develop new initiatives advancing a long-term research vision of advanced accelerators and a strategic plan aligned with DOE and national goals, in collaboration with Division and Laboratory leadership;
  • Play a leadership role in planning, managing and performing forefront investigations in the development and application of laser-driven plasma accelerators;
  • Foster strong relationships with partner divisions, laboratories and institutions, and effectively generate and manage project roles;
  • Address management and resource challenges of a complex program;
  • Ensure operational effectiveness and compliance of the program, working with Division staff;
  • Maintain a safe working environment in the program, engaging staff and ensuring the proper safety processes and disposition of waste materials;

  • Participate strongly in community planning and review activities;
  • Disseminate personal and program experimental and research results via publications in refereed journals and presentations;
  • Exercise independent judgment to solve complex problems using ingenuity, creativity, and scientific principles;
  • Participate in BELLA Center and Divisional planning, and develop relationships and interact with staff in the Division, Laboratory and externally.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in Experimental Physics or equivalent;
  • Strong record of research accomplishments, as evidenced by scholarly publications, development of facilities, and funded research grants;
  • Experience and demonstrated competence in the management of scientific projects and collaborative science with multidisciplinary teams;
  • Recognized as an expert in the areas of advanced accelerators, short-pulse laser technology, control systems, and instrumentation;
  • Knowledge of accelerator physics and awareness of the challenges of accelerator technology and the needs of users of accelerators;
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical direction and effective leadership to collaborations among a diverse group of scientists, engineers, and technical personnel;
