And they turn what they find into work that changes the world around us. What could you achieve with the world-leading facilities and experts of one of Europe's largest research organisations by your side?

Join us and discover what's possible!

What we are looking for

We are looking for an experienced radiation protection professional with a desire to work in a collaborative culture that values equality, diversity and inclusion. Working with a variety of multi-disciplinary teams to provide excellent service and to continuously improve our radiation protection capability.

ISIS produces radiation as a by-product of its operational activities; prompt radiation from high energy proton, neutron and muons beams, and the radiation and radioactive contamination coming from the activation of various solid materials, liquids and gases (airborne).

As the Health Physics Section Leader you will be responsible for the management and delivery of the health physics and radioactive waste operations capability. Developing the Health Physics team and our working practices, working closely with technical specialists to drive and maintain ALARP principles in projects and throughout operational activities. Your work will involve fostering relationships with internal and external stakeholders, developing and managing your team to provide robust services and management systems, as well as applying state-of-the-art instrumentation, utilising modern IT systems, and maintaining our emergency response commitments.

In our team, you will have excellent opportunities to develop your career. We are committed to the continual professional development of our staff.

Essential aspects you need to be great in this role

  • Have significant practical health physics experience, underpinned by applicable formal qualifications.
  • Be able to demonstrate application of radiation protection best practices in a radiation environment that encompasses a mixed field of gamma, neutron, alpha and beta particles.
  • Enjoy seeking out areas of development to continuously improve our capabilities, take on challenges and inspire change.
  • Have experience in managing service delivery teams with the ability to apply different management styles.
  • Be a good communicator with an ability to communicate effectively, written and oral, for a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Have good IT skills, including MS Office. Be used to working with, and manipulating data in spreadsheets, producing formal written information, reports and presentations.
  • Must be physically able to access areas including tunnels, walkways, and areas at height. Work in designated controlled radiation and contamination areas as a classified radiation worker. Wear personal and respiratory protective equipment as required.
  • Be willing to join in the team's out of hours support roster, including responding to radiological incidents including RADSAFE response.
  • Be willing to travel occasionally within the UK and overseas and hold a UK driving license.

Desirable aspects that would make you better suited to this role

  • Good understanding of radiological protection issues affecting high-energy (proton) accelerator facilities.
  • Experience in emergency response and recovery arrangements for radiological incidents
  • Detailed understanding of selection, use operation and maintenance of radiological instrumentation
  • Practical experience in the application of computer controlled radiation detectors.
  • Basic programming knowledge (macros) and data (statistical) analysis capabilities.
  • Some experience participating in HSE/ONR/EA inspections.
  • Some Project Management experience.
  • Member of the Society for Radiological Protection.
  • NEBOSH certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.

STFC imageAt the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), research is driven by practical applications and a curiosity to create a world-leading hub of scientific and engineering excellence. Our science and facilities enable researchers to answer fundamental questions about the nature of the universe. Success typically requires long-term strategic investment, international collaboration on a global scale and the capability to push the limits of technology and engineering. To remain internationally competitive in our areas of science and to keep our facilities at the leading edge, we have to develop bespoke technology that cannot be reliably sourced on the open market, for example in detectors and instrumentation, accelerators, specialist engineering, optics and e-infrastructure. These technologies are often also applied to address broader societal and industrial challenges and we actively promote their translation and commercialization.

Why work for us
When you join STFC, you become a key part of one of Europe’s largest research organizations. We are trusted to support, enable, and undertake cutting-edge projects in an amazing diversity of fields that you could be a part of.
