This work will take place within the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate, home to the world’s most energetic laser. It is an exciting time to join the team that achieved fusion ignition in December 2022, a historic moment in science, opening up new physics regimes and setting the stage for new fusion energy possibilities.

You will provide engineering solutions for developing, implementing, and maintaining diagnostic systems hardware within the Target Area Science & Engineering Operations group. This position will include maintenance and upgrades to fielded diagnostic systems, support infrastructure, facility integration, technical project management, and systems engineering duties. You will contribute to the engineering design and development of new hardware and system upgrades to continually improve system performance and reliability. These positions are in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will

  • Provide engineering support for routine operations of diagnostic positioner and detector systems deployed on NIF,
  • Work closely with inter-organizational contacts and external customers to define requirements for diagnostics and positioners.
  • Participate in formal and informal design reviews. Present design materials to inter-organization and external audiences. Manage the system requirement specifications used for control system design.
  • Manage the system requirement specifications used for control system design.
  • Contribute to daily activities in NIF by providing engineering support for deployment, activation, commissioning, troubleshooting and maintenance of positioner and diagnostic systems.
