Pay Range

$160,590 - $216,360 Annually for the SEL.3 level

$192,190 - $259,584 Annually for the SEL.4 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

The Safety Engineering Functional Area (SEFA) has an opening for a Safety Engineering Lead that will apply leadership and guidance to the Safety Engineering team. You will provide leadership and technical oversite for subject-matter expert (SME) engineers that will provide safety engineering solutions for developing, implementing, and maintaining various projects across the institution. This position will support multiple programs as an integral member of the Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) Associate Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will

 

 

  • Provide leadership and technical expertise to Electrical Safety, Hazardous Energy Control, Pressure Safety, Hoisting & Rigging, and Industrial Ventilation & Filtration SMEs to ensure high quality services and a unified approach utilizing best practices in innovative ways to develop and implement comprehensive safety engineering in the support to multiple programs.
  • Supervise and provide technical and administrative direction, guidance, support, mentoring, coaching, and promote teamwork for a team of 8+ members. Participate in performance reviews, ranking, and salary management process.
  • Collaborate closely with programmatic personnel and external sponsors to ensure current and future technical and staffing needs are being addressed.
  • Provide technical, safety, and security leadership to Group personnel and activities and collaborate with project principals and group personnel in defining programmatic objectives.
  • Assign work and remain cognizant of the technical goals, solution approaches, and progress of all members’ projects.
  • Provide strategic technical advice to ES&H management and LLNL programs on regulatory issues, their potential impact and mitigation. Support mission organizations and programs by providing SMEs as necessary to enable safe execution of mission.
  • Develop performance objectives intended to strengthen the institutions safety programs, moving them toward excellence, in collaboration with DOE and NNSA colleagues and ES&H management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Set broad project vision and strategy and influence technical direction for self and others.
  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to lead a team, advise senior management, and to positively represent the Program and the Laboratory.
  • Serve as subject matter expert in analysis for the Program at meetings, briefings, design reviews, and committee activities both internal and external to the Laboratory.
  • Influence strategic technical decisions made by senior management and external customers.

 


Qualifications

 

 

 

 

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or other engineering/scientific, technical-related field, or the equivalent combination of education and significant related experience.
  • Proven advanced ability to lead and promote technical projects.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.
  • Ability to promote and maintain productive relationships within the department and across Laboratory directorates / programs.
  • Effective leadership, interpersonal skills, and supervisory skills to lead personnel, write performance appraisals, and actively participate in ranking sessions.
  • Significant experience and advanced knowledge of engineering in some of the following areas: Electrical Safety, Hazardous Energy Control, Pressure Safety, Hoisting & Rigging, and Industrial Ventilation & Filtration safety disciplines.
  • Substantial experience with and working knowledge of DOE requirements and other national standards and regulations related to the described disciplines.
  • Substantial experience ensuring engineering standards are established and met.
  • Experience in the areas of performance management, including motivating, leading, supervising, mentoring, and hiring a team of professionals supporting a complex, diverse organization.

  • Extensive experience in the leadership of technical projects, project planning, and execution.
  • Highly advanced organizational, problem solving, conflict resolution, decision making and leadership skills necessary to independently advise, recommend, negotiate, and approve appropriate actions and implement solutions to highly complex issues.
  • Expert verbal and written communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, and advise complex technical information to all levels of management, including regulatory agencies and key stakeholders.

 


Qualifications We Desire

 

 

 

 

  • Understanding of LLNL policies and procedures.
  • Master's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or other engineering/scientific, technical-related field.

Site 300

Site 300 is an experimental test site operated by LLNL. Situated on 7,000 acres in rural foothills approximately six miles southwest of downtown Tracy and 15 miles southeast of Livermore, Site 300 hosts approximately 200 employees with expertise in such fields as engineering, chemistry, biology, and environmental restoration. Employees assigned to work at Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis ).

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
