Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Are you a mechanical/electromechanical technician with experience in mechanical assembly and works coordination? Then seize this opportunity to maintain mechanical beam lines equipment, install and maintain beam lines and experimental facilities in the world’s largest particle physics research laboratory, CERN. Work in the heart of the laboratory’s core business; take part!

Moving towards the role of supervising one of our large fixed-target experimental areas, you will join the Experimental Areas (EA) Group of the Beams Department (BE), specifically the Design and Coordination (DC) section.

Functions

Following an initial training period within the BE-EA Group, as a polyvalent mechanical technician you will be working in the team responsible for beam lines and infrastructure maintenance works coordination and beam lines mechanical equipment such as beam intercepting devices and beam instrumentations for secondary beam lines and experimental areas. Beam instrumentations and beam intercepting devices such as collimators are key components in the secondary beam lines complex. It consists of motorized mechanical equipment used to absorb and/or attenuate secondary particles needed for physics, R&D and material irradiation programs in North and East experimental areas complex.

You will take part in the preparation, maintenance and consolidation program within NA-CONS project of mechanical beam lines equipment, and also in the installation, maintenance and frequent modifications and adjustments of secondary beam lines and experimental areas facilities, and you will:

  • Carry-out the preventive and remedial maintenance works for the BE-EA mechanical equipment installed in secondary beam lines.
  • Assemble, test, and install beam lines equipment.
  • Coordinate material and spare parts procurement, production follow-up and quality control with external companies or CERN internal services.
  • Contribute to the (re)design of mechanical equipment in collaboration with engineers, technicians and designers within BE-EA, in the context of the North Area Consolidation project (NA-CONS) program.
  • Use a dedicated maintenance software tool (GMAO) in order to implement work orders, ensure traceability, and the update of the database for each equipment.
  • Coordinate the installation, maintenance, modifications activities of experimental halls included related beam lines and tunnels as well as in the context of a large ongoing consolidation project.
  • Liaise with related equipment/service groups and ensure the preparation of technical stop and shutdown schedules, acting for relevant activities as responsible worksite supervisor.

  • Demonstrated experience in assembly and test of high precision mechanical systems.
  • Hands-on experience with:
    • Precision assembly and construction.
    • Commissioning and operation of electro-mechanical equipment.
    • Maintenance tools and asset management.
  • Reading mechanical design drawings and tolerance specifications.
  • Demonstrated experience of work planning, coordination and supervision of a small technical team.
  • Experience of the following will be considered as an asset:
    • Working on prototyping.
    • Machining on traditional machine tools.
    • CAD design.

Technical competencies:

  • Construction, test and installation of electromechanical equipment and systems.
  • Assembly and integration of accelerator components: as well as infrastructure for detectors or experimental facilities.
  • Operation and maintenance of electromechanical equipment and systems
