Job Description

We have openings for Nuclear Diagnostics Staff Researchers to lead new efforts to develop new diagnostics and perform analysis from both future and past experiments.  You will provide scientific leadership for new capabilities and requirements at pulsed power and future facilities within the NNSA complex. Current diagnostic developments include a multi-axis neutron time-of-flight system, a time integrated and time resolved neutron imaging system, and a solid debris radchem diagnostic.  This effort is in an exciting growth phase, with many opportunities for career development in the national security domain.   You will have the opportunity to work on the development efforts above, or on analysis of exiting data based on expertise and interest.  This position is the Fusion Energy Sciences Program (FESP) National Security Applied Plasmas Group in the Physics Division. 

In this role you will 

  • Design, develop, test and implement improvements for existing and planned particle diagnostics and implement techniques and sources for calibration measurements.
  • Research, design and execute nuclear based experiments at the Z-machine.
  • Design, field, and coordinate the development of nuclear diagnostics.
  • Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
  • Author and present technical and scientific reports, presentations, and publications for internal and external audiences including the DOE community and at conferences.
  • Coordinate with engineers, technicians and people from different groups to plan and execute experimental campaigns.
  • Pursue independent, but complementary, research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists, internally and externally to the laboratory.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • PhD in Plasma Physics, Hydrodynamics, Shock Physics, Spectroscopy, Condensed Matter, related field or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Advanced experience in experimental physics in laser-plasma interactions, hydrodynamics, radiation driven hydrodynamics, radiation transport, condensed matter, high energy density physics, nuclear diagnostic instrumentation, applied physics, plasma diagnostics.
  • Advanced knowledge in one or more of the following areas: neutron imaging, particle time-of-flight, nuclear activation, and nuclear radiochemistry.
  • Significant analytical and experimental skills.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
  • Advanced initiative, interpersonal skills, and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Ability to perform independent research.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience developing, calibrating and fielding nuclear diagnostics and associated analysis techniques.
  • Experience with electron optics and/or pulsed electronics
  • Experience with Monte Carlo simulation techniques.

Security Clearance
