Job Description

We have an immediate opening for a postdoctoral researcher in the area of nanoelectronics. The research will focus on challenges and opportunities of emerging electronic materials such as wide and ultrawide bandgap semiconductors (e.g., SiC, Diamond, AlN, AlGaN) and 1D and 2D materials (e.g., CNT, BNNT, WSe2, MoTe2). You will utilize expertise in advanced bottom-up and/or top-down nanofabrication techniques to integrate novel nanostructured materials into next-generation devices. You will work with a dynamic interdisciplinary team of engineers and scientists within the Micro and Nano Technology Section. This position is in the Materials Engineering Division (MED) of the Engineering directorate.

In this role you will

  • Conduct research in the areas of nanostructured material fabrication and device characterization.
  • Design, implement, and analyze experiments for the creation and integration of novel nanoelectronic materials in functional systems.
  • Contribute to and actively participate in the conception and execution of research to address defined problems.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences seminars and/or technical meetings.
  • Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment both at LLNL and in other national laboratories and universities to accomplish research goals.
  • Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of engineers and scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field, with an emphasis on nanoelectronic materials.
  • Experience with integrating novel materials (e.g., nanostructures) into functional devices by conventional and advanced fabrication techniques (e.g., e-beam lithography, ion-beam lithography, and plasma etching).
  • Fundamental knowledge and practical application of semiconductor physics, theory, and circuit design.
  • Experience with electrical characterization, such as CV/IV, Hall effect, deep-level transient spectroscopy (DLTS), optoelectronic characterization.
  • Experience with characterizing the optical, electronic, and/or electrochemical performance of nanostructured materials.
  • Ability to perform as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, measurement, and data acquisition techniques, including developing innovative solutions to scientific and technical problems.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with device fabrication and testing for applications such as vacuum electronics, chemical sensing, display technology, or computing.
  • Experience with device and multi-physics simulation packages such as SILVACO and COMSOL.
  • Knowledgeable about detailed materials characterization, such as Raman, PL, SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, SAXS/WAXS.
  • Proficiency with basic programming software for data analysis, such as MATLAB, Python, or LabVIEW.
  • Ability to develop independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
