Job Details

The Department of Physics, at the University of South Dakota (USD), invites applications for a Tenure-track Assistant Professor, with expertise at the junction of particle, nuclear, astro-physics, materials science for radiation detection, or related areas with a preferred starting date of Fall 2022. The successful candidate will be able to establish a competitive and externally funded research program in one of these or a related field and will be expected to teach both undergraduate and graduate classes effectively in face-to-face and online environments. A PhD in Physics or a related field is required. Postdoctoral experience is preferred.

With its proximity to the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), USD Physics has a focus on related science, with the majority of our faculty members working in the areas of neutrino physics, nuclear physics, and particle astrophysics. USD Physics is involved in experiments and consortiums including COHERENT, DUNE, GEMADARC, LEGEND, LUX, Majorana Demonstrator, MINER, nEXO, and SuperCDMS. USD plays a leading role in the development of germanium-based experiments as the only US university growing high-purity Ge crystals and making Ge detectors.

A complete application consists of:

• a cover letter

• a current Curriculum Vitae (including a list of publications)

• a statement of research interests

• a statement of teaching interests, experience and vision (including mentoring and outreach)

• Name, title, and contact information for at least three references

The first review of applications has begun since October 15, 2021 and will continue until a successful candidate is found.

Our undergraduate program is designed so you receive the best of both worlds - a broad education steeped in the liberal arts through the classroom and technical skills honed through an undergraduate research experience. The coursework for the physics major matches the curriculum one would find in liberal arts colleges across the nation. The undergraduate research experiences contribute to large experiments seeking to understand the fundamental workings of the universe by seeking to detect dark matter or learn more about the properties of neutrinos.

Our graduate program provides high quality graduate education to assist the state of South Dakota in becoming a recognized leader in research and technology development, and to increase participation in the opportunities afforded by the creation of the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF). We expect students in the program to conduct research activities consistent with the experiments planned for SURF and to contribute in meaningful ways to those experiments. Students typically pursue a research topic as soon as they enroll in our program with projects focused on experiments searching for rare physics events located in underground environments.
