DESY has an exciting opportunity for the position of the work package leader of the magnetics group within the PETRA IV project and leader of the magnetics technology team within the Accelerator Division. This person will be responsible for managing the activities of this key work package that has a central role in the planned upgrade of the 2.3 km circumference hard X-ray synchrotron PETRA IV. In support of the project as well as beyond the project the responsibilities also include development of magnet technology (e.g. hybrid magnets) for future upgrades and operations of large scale and small accelerators at DESY.

We are looking for a creative and experienced scientist in the field of magnet technology with proven management skills.

About your role:

  • Responsible for managing all aspects of the Magnetics technology team
  • Responsible for the development of magnetic components, including R&D on novel concepts for high field electromagnets, permanent magnets, hybrid magnets (permanent and electro-magnet based), cryogenically cooled magnets and for keeping up-to-date with world-wide developments in magnet technology, and be proactive in ensuring DESY is state-of-the-art in the field
  • The core activities and responsibilities of the Magnetics technology team are to carry out: detailed magnetic and mechanical design, including the integration of vacuum vessels and support stands; develop specifications, procure magnets and magnetic systems; magnetic measurements, installation, operation, maintenance
  • Manage the Magnet assembly and test laboratories
  • Ensure that a variety of measuring techniques are provided: meet the requirements of the upcoming DESY projects
  • Ensure close coordination with the accelerator physics, controls, engineering, survey, power supply and vacuum groups as well as with the Photon Science Division scientists regarding future insertion devices
  • Responsible for associated budgets and planning aspects of the work package, for providing training for the Operating Team and others in the use of the magnets
  • Responsible for ensuring a quality asssurance system for magnet production
  • Ensure that all work carried out, is performed safely, with appropriate documentation (Risk Assessments and Method Statements) and in compliance with all the DESY Health and Safety procedures and policies

About you:

  • PhD level or equivalent experience in an appropriate branch of physics or engineering
  • Proven track record of extensive experience in as many of the following topics as possible: design & construction of conventional and innovative resistive magnets, permanent magnet systems, design & construction of electromagnetic systems for accelerators, magnetic field calculations, magnetic measurements and analysis
  • Understanding of as many of the following topics as possible: physics and engineering of accelerator magnet systems and insertion devices, basic operation of accelerators and the influence of magnet, design and assembly errors
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written
  • Experience of line management, project management and planning, safety management and QA systems
