AWE is currently recruiting for an Experimental Scientist to conduct world leading research in the study of hydrodynamic behaviour of materials under explosive loading conditions. This role will support AWE's core mission of underwriting the safety and performance of the UKs nuclear deterrent and maintaining national nuclear security as well as developing the capabilities and technologies needed to meet future nuclear deterrent needs.

Package - £33,300 - c£44,000 (depending on your suitability and level of experience)

You will be working in a team consisting mainly of physicists, but with some engineers and materials scientists. This role will include experimentation with explosives and computational modelling of the experiments. You will have the opportunity to use AWE's unique computational and experimental facilities and those across the UK. Key objectives for your work will be to progress experimental projects on the safe containment of high explosive events, developing capabilities to effectively protect against explosively generated threats, such as blast, fragment and jet attack. Due to the unique nature of the work training will be provided.

What will you be responsible for?

  • Learning and maintaining a good level of knowledge and awareness in the behaviour of explosively driven materials and blast
  • Participate in collaborative working relationships with UK universities and US national laboratories
  • Ensuring technical equipment is maintained and operated appropriately and risks are appropriately communicated
  • Documenting your work in reports and presentations
  • Ensure the safe conduct of research activities

What will you need to be considered?

  • A Degree in a scientific or STEM discipline, equivalent NQF level 6 qualification or equivalent experience
  • Working experience conducting empirical scientific research and drawing and presenting sound detailed conclusions
  • Previous experience of managing own research project activities
  • The ability to plan and manage the delivery of your own work or that of a small technical team
  • The ability to provide technical input within your own field of expertise that can influence scientific projects
  • Ability to learn to manage specialist equipment and develop and define specialist research processes to deliver solutions to technical problems, appropriate training will be provided
  • The ability to solve technical problems by applying specialist technical knowledge to own work or working as part of a team, transferring knowledge to help solve problems outside their own area of expertise

Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role.
