Pay Range

$113,730 - $153,264 Annually for the TSS.2 level

$136,500 - $183,888 Annually for the TSS.3 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for an Environmental Health Physiciststo supportthe Waste and Air Quality Office (WAQO) in the Environmental Functional Area (EFA) within the Environment, Safety & Health (ES&H) Directorate. This position will provide environmental health physics expertise in the areas of environmental ALARA, including ambient radiation monitoring of off-normal and normal conditions and radiation dose assessments, and provide support and guidance to other ES&H team members in the area of environmental health physics. This position will interact with professional colleagues, mid-level internal management, and customer representatives on matters requiring coordination across organizational lines.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Provide support in specific areas of assignment, including but not limited to, direct measurement of ambient radiation and measurement of tritium in air via collection on sampling media.
  • Write standard operating procedures for designated sampling systems and human and biota dose assessment processes.
  • Conduct air dispersion modeling using short-term and long-term modelling codes, such as HotSpot and CAP88-PC, for planned and actual emissions.
  • Conduct human and biota dose assessments using DOE/EPA-approved software and hand calculations.
  • Complete data processing using statistical analysis.
  • Provide feedback to management regarding the effectiveness of the environmental monitoring networks in areas of responsibility.
  • Develop realistic and programmatic staff emissions scenarios for planned future operations, working with ES&H Team members.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the TSS.3 level

  • Update/establish assigned ambient air and direct radiation monitoring programs (normal and off-normal conditions) and evaluate the results of these monitoring programs.
  • Conduct investigations of environmental impacts of incidents or accidents involving radiation and make recommendations to prevent a recurrence.
  • Develop LLNL-specific radiological emergency response training for other ES&H professionals.
  • Establish/update alarm response protocols for emergency response radiation detection equipment.
  • Mentor less-experienced personnel.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Physics, Radiation Physics, Radiation Protection, Meteorology, Environmental Engineering, or equivalent level of demonstrated knowledge, and relevant previous experience.
  • Ability to interpret, negotiate, recommend, and implement solutions for moderate to complex problems.
  • Demonstrated analytical and computational skills in moderately complex data acquisition, data manipulation, and statistical analysis.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively write, present, explain, and communicate moderately complex information to all levels of personnel.
  • Demonstrated effective organizational skills with detail orientation necessary to coordinate multiple and frequently conflicting concurrent tasks in an environment with frequent interruptions while providing high-level customer service and good follow-through.
  • Demonstrated ability to improve processes.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment with a broad cross-section of people and organizations, managing moderately complex to complex projects and meeting schedules.

Additional qualifications at the TSS.3 level

  • Significant experience and demonstrated ability to lead independent work and advanced decision-making and problem-solving skills to evaluate, negotiate, develop, and implement actions/solutions for complex problems.
  • Demonstrated advanced analytical and computational skills in monitoring complex data acquisition, data manipulation and statistical analysis.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and to present and communicate complex technical information to all levels of management both internal and external to the Laboratory, including regulatory agencies and key stakeholders.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master’s degree in Health Physics, Radiation Physics, Radiation Protection, or related field.
  • Demonstrated air dispersion and environmental dose assessment modeling skills.
  • Experience with environmental radiation detection equipment, including real-time systems.

Site 300

Site 300 is an experimental test site operated by LLNL. Situated on 7,000 acres in rural foothills approximately six miles southwest of downtown Tracy and 15 miles southeast of Livermore, Site 300 hosts approximately 200 employees with expertise in such fields as engineering, chemistry, biology, and environmental restoration. Employees assigned to work at Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis ).

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
