The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy and environment and human health. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2100 people.

The synchrotron beam dynamics group is responsible for the design, commissioning and operational support of the Swiss Light Source (SLS), which is currently undergoing a major upgrade (project SLS-2.0). To reinforce this group we are looking for an Accelerator Physicist, 80% or more.

In a motivated cross-disciplinary team, you plan and carry out measurements, theoretical studies and simulations. You participate in the commissioning, operation and further development of the synchrotron facility. Your work includes the design and implementation of calibration and optimization procedures to achieve and maintain the quality objectives of the facility. Close collaboration with technical experts for the numerous subsystems of the synchrotron as well as with beamline responsibles is an important part of your work.

Your profile

  • You have an academic degree in physics or engineering with profound knowledge of applied accelerator physics
  • You have a demonstrated ability to compute beam optics and other parameters relevant to beam performance
  • You have experience in experimental techniques and data analysis in the context of beam measurements
  • You enjoy working in a diverse team and communicate efficiently in English. If you do not speak German, you are willing to strive for at least a basic level in that language
