Job Description
We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join a team developing and applying novel tools for the interpretation of current tokamak experiments and design of fusion reactors. The role will involve working with physicists and applied mathematicians, using tokamak divertor simulation models UEDGE and BOUT++ to analyze experiments, automating the analysis workflow and applying adaptive sampling techniques to efficiently quantify uncertainties. This will provide opportunities for physics discovery and contribute to the design of divertor components that are critical to fusion reactor power handling. This position is in the Fusion Energy Sciences Program within the Physics Division.
You will
- Perform UEDGE and BOUT++ simulations of experiments on DIII-D and other tokamaks
- Work with a team of applied mathematicians, experimental and computational physicists to apply statistical techniques to interpret trends across experiments
- Develop novel techniques for automating simulation workflows and efficiently quantifying uncertainties through adaptive sampling techniques
- Design and lead studies to critically evaluate model predictive capability
- Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals
- Pursue independent research aligned with the group’s interests and interact with exceptional scientists both internal and external to the Laboratory
- Maintain awareness of technical literature in assigned areas
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings
- Perform all assignments in accordance with LLNL ES&H, security, and business practice policies
- Perform other project-relevant duties as assigned
Qualifications
- PhD in Physics, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field
- Experience in performing simulations of physical systems to answer research questions
- Experience in writing software for data analysis in a commonly used scientific programming language such as Python, Julia, IDL, or MATLAB
- Knowledge of statistical techniques for model parameter estimation and error propagation
- Ability to carry out independent research projects with results published in peer-reviewed journals
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in effective presentations at seminars, conferences, and other meetings
- Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment
Qualifications We Desire
- Experience in experimental, theoretical, or computational plasma physics research
- Experience in writing Python software to analyze simulation or experimental datasets
- Experience in writing or modifying simulation codes in Fortran or C++.
- Knowledge of plasma physics relevant to the divertor region of tokamak fusion devices
- Knowledge of adaptive sampling techniques as applied to computationally expensive simulations with many input parameters
