Job Description

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to design unique instrumentation and develop spectroscopic methods at the intersection of applied photonics, atmospheric chemistry, and trace gas measurements. In an effort to apply rare-isotope detection to challenging scientific problems, your work will include; designing and building fieldable laser spectrometers, construction and application of high-speed data acquisition systems, theoretical modeling of underlying physical phenomena, and dissemination of scientific findings. This position is in the Atmospheric, Earth, and Energy Division within the Physical and Life Sciences Directorate.

In this role you will

  • Identify trace atmospheric compounds which can provide information about a phenomena of interest and develop spectroscopic techniques for their measurement in relevant scenarios.
  • Design fieldable instrumentation and analyze experimental data for the detection of rare-isotopes and chemical species in atmospheric samples.
  • Design, implement, and troubleshoot optical, laser, and electronic systems.
  • Refine analytical procedures to separate and measure target chemical species.
  • Collaborate with other team members in the design, implementation, and qualification of cutting-edge R&D systems.
  • Develop spectroscopic models to interpret experiment data.
  • Publish research results in internal reports, peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals, and present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.
  • Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
  • Maintain an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook including complete records of experiments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • This position requires the ability to secure and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
  • PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or field related to stated role responibilities.
  • Experience with analytical measurement techniques particularly laser spectroscopy.
  • Ability as an experimentalist with a range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution; ability to understand and analyze experimental results (including computational experimental control and data analysis e.g. , python, Matlab, C, C++, R, Verilog, Labview, or equivalent).
