Job Description

We have an opening for a Senior Electrical/Radar Engineer. You will be a part of the Flight Test Group, which is a fast-paced, cross disciplinary team supporting downrange scoring for flight test missions - both nuclear and conventional weapons systems. We use a variety of sensors, including radar, to assess weapon system accuracy and performance. The Flight Test Group partners with other DoD organizations (i.e., Navy, Army, Air Force) to field radar systems in a variety of locations, including the broad ocean area. You will spearhead development efforts to incorporate existing or developmental radar systems on flight missions by working with existing team members and vendors, while coordinating testing events to qualify hardware and radar processing algorithms. This position will require some travel in the field to ensure the radar systems are setup properly and are collecting the necessary data in addition to presenting data in front of DoD sponsors and various locations around the US. This position is in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Oversee the Radar on a Raft (ROAR) project; providing guidance, technical direction, and solutions in the design, development, and production of hardware needed to field an existing X-band radar on an autonomous raft.
  • Work with radar vendors on their COTS (commercial off the shelf) radar systems to understand how and when these systems can be used and propose solutions for areas where there are limitations.
  • Develop software tools for physics-based simulations, mission planning, and deployment optimization. This includes development of tools and algorithms to post-process radar data to extract meaningful engineering data that can aid with assessment of the terminal event on flight missions.
  • Assist the team with advanced engineering design solutions on a variety of projects in one or more of the following technical areas: analog and digital circuit design, telemetry, diagnostics and sensor development, electro-optic systems, data acquisition systems and tester development, process control systems.
  • Provide advanced conceptual solutions to a diverse range of complex issues/problems that require analysis and creative use of established techniques and methods.
  • Generate detailed plans, schedules, and budgets for project activities.
  • Prepare supporting safety and engineering documentation and reports and participate in engineering design reviews.
  • Interface with various DoD organizations and provide briefings and plans for implementation of hardware solutions for relevant data collection.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.4 level

  • Set broad project vision and strategy and influence technical direction for self and others.
  • Develop new ideas and redefine customer requirements that impact organizational operations or directions.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of radar systems engineering and electrical engineering concepts related to use of radar systems in the field to include but not limited to: in depth understanding and experience with link budget analysis, electronic and digital beam steering, noise sources, and signal quality evaluation.
  • Advanced knowledge of signal processing techniques and machine learning (e.g., estimation and detection, statistical signal analysis, filter design, target tracking, etc.).
  • Strong coding ability for data analysis, physics-based simulations, and algorithm development, preferably in Python and/or Matlab. Experience with C/C++ coding is a strong plus.
  • Significant experience in conducting experiments of complex electro-mechanical systems and the advanced application of timing and data acquisition systems.
  • Significant experience in managing, overseeing, and delivering multiple projects on budget and schedule.
  • Advanced communication skills with proven ability to present concepts and ideas in a clear and coherent manner, both verbal and written for presentation and interaction with other technical staff members.
  • Ability to travel.

Additional qualifications at the SES.4 level

  • Significant experience in making proposals to sponsors to help fund technology developments and then executing on those proposals to meet sponsor expectations.
  • Expert knowledge and experience with sea motion characterization and compensation. Experience and knowledge of localization techniques based on GPS and IMU data and an in-depth understanding of geometry and coordinate system transformation.
