Job Description

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to work on Computational Accelerator Physics in support of designing and building the next generation many-pulse radiography Linear Induction Accelerator (LIA). The assignment includes development of tools to enable Exascale computation of next generation LIA designs in WarpX a new Particle-In-Cell code suite built on top of AMReX. (The work will be predominantly computational, however benchmarking of newly developed simulation codes, physics packages, and LIA models to existing radiography accelerators (i.e.Flash X-Ray Facility (FXR)) will be required, and may include shot proposals and data analysis. In this role you will also publish research results in peer-reviewed journals, and present results at external conferences, seminars, and/or technical meetings. This position is in the Electromagnetics Section in the National Security Engineering (NSED), within the Engineering Directorate.

In this role you will

  • Conduct research and development of advanced Linear Induction Accelerator simulation efforts.
  • Add physics packages into scientific code to capture relevant beam/surface interactions.
  • Deploy and test simulation code on Exascale HPC environments.
  • Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
  • Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars, and/or technical meetings.
  • Ability to travel as necessary to participate in experiments at accelerator facilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • PhD in Physics, Engineering, or related computational science field.
  • Ability to perform independent research and use a scientific approach to solve problems.
  • Ability to develop and maintain scientific code within a team environment.
  • Experience with large scale, parallel (e.g. MPI/OpenMP/CUDA/etc.) numerical simulation techniques (e.g. Particle-In-Cell) for solving complex, coupled partial differential equations.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills, such as would be needed to write reports, peer-reviewed publications, and proposals.
  • Effective initiative and interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with one or more of the following areas: Relativistic plasma or electron beam simulation techniques, high current density and space charge limited accelerator beam physics and simulation techniques, high energy electron beam/surface interaction physics, plasma physics, accelerator physics, electrical engineering.
  • Familiarity with standard coding practices. (e.g. Git, CI, Unit testing, etc.).
