Salary: £39748 to £44166 per annum (dependent on skills and experience). A Specialist Allowance of up to £3000 per annum is also available for this role.

The Scientific Computing Department (SCD) provides large-scale computing facilities, computing data services and infrastructure. Made up of scientific computing, computation, AI and numerical analysis groups, the expertise and intelligence SCD provides, underpins almost every key calculation across the organisation and beyond.

Currently SCD is looking to recruit Senior Systems Administrators with experience in system management using Unix or Linux systems

The extensive infrastructure we support includes both High Throughput Computing (HTC) and High Performance Computing (HPC), extensive cloud and virtualization services, large capacity data storage resources and a range of general purpose scientific computing services.

Responsibilities include:

• Taking ownership of specific scientific computing platforms, ensuring they run smoothly, meet their operational commitments and deliver project work to agreed timelines;
• Investigating, recommending and deploying new technologies, services and applications as required to enhance the service levels provided;
• Acting as a technical expert during interaction with the science communities to help understand, define and develop future requirement;
• You may lead a small team, planning, coordinating and operating the scientific computing resources managed by the team.

Essential skills required:

• Significant experience in System Administration procedures and practice;
• Expertise in Unix or Linux Operating Systems;
• Ability to diagnose system faults and analyse problems;
• Supporting software developers in their development activities on our infrastructure;
• Ability to work independently and manage projects including leading small teams delivering commitments on time.
