Location: Reading/ Basingstoke area

Salary: £33,850 - £48,000 (dependent on skills and experience)

AWE are seeking Engineers and Applied Physicists with design, analysis or research experience in the effect of Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR) on electrical, electronic and ordnance systems.

You will be working in a small team of electrical/electronic engineers responsible for investigating the effect of EMR on electrical, electronic and ordnance systems and related areas. This will require you to apply the fundamental principles of EMR and related concepts to provide, for example, evidence supporting safety arguments relating to a device or facility. You will be responsible for presenting results in a formal report containing a full description of the investigation and analysis process and supporting arguments.

AWE provides extensive support and in-house training to employees as required. The company also provides access to internal and external research, computing facilities, test equipment and test chambers.

Essential Requirements:

  • An enquiring mind willing to learn and develop in a unique high security and safety environment

  • A degree or similar qualification in a relevant subject (e.g. engineering, physics, or applied physics)

  • A sound theoretical grounding in the areas of EMR (Electromagnetic Radiation) and related areas including antennas, shielding and transmission lines

  • Hands-on experience in applying EMR principles to design, assessment or research relating to systems or devices

  • Ability to communicate technical principles to all levels within an organisation verbally and by writing high quality formal documents

  • Willingness to conform to company procedures including maintaining mandatory security and safety training

 

Advantageous but not mandatory:

  • Post-graduate qualification or research in a relevant subject area

  • Regulatory experience of assessments in the area of the control of EMR e.g. HERO (Hazards of EMR to Ordnance), Def Stan 59-114, Mil Std 464C and relevant standard EMR environments

  • Knowledge of related areas e.g. Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), lightning, RF Safety, Electro-Explosive Devices, Human Exposure Limits, EMR Shielding, Radiocommunications and Radar systems, High Power Microwaves, Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) phenomena

  • Knowledge of relevant safety principles, for example ALARP, bowtie, Swiss Cheese, probability of failure on demand, safety barriers

  • Experience of producing formal technical assessments and related documents within a highly regulated and safety-critical evidence framework

 

Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role.
