As part of the ESRF’s recently completed modernisation programme named the “Extremely Brilliant Source” (EBS, http://ebs.esrf.fr/about-esrf-ebs/), a new experiment control system was developed with an object-oriented and plug-in based scanning and sequencing engine written in Python and using Tango as the high-level distributed system. The deployment of the new system is making good progress but needs to be continued until all beamlines are upgraded. A number of new beamlines are currently under construction or will be built in the coming years with even more challenging requirements for data acquisition and data analysis.

You will join a team of 17 software engineers, the Beamline Control Unit (BCU), contributing to these developments. The BCU is responsible for the control system of 42 beamlines. You will be responsible for the planning, implementation and commissioning of beamline control systems, the development of new control system features required and the development and installation of challenging data acquisition systems.

You will also participate in the help-desk and standby service for scientific experiments and be responsible for the software support and advice for a set of beamlines.

Your missions will be the following:

  • Planning, installation and commissioning of the control system on the ESRF beamlines;
  • Development and documentation of new required features in the control system;
  • Development and documentation of modules to integrate new hardware;
  • Development and commissioning of high speed data acquisition systems for new experiments;
  • Beamline automation to hide complexity from users;
  • Long term support;
  • Software support for experiments: coordination with scientists, project follow-up, improvements, trouble shooting;
  • Higher university degree (Master or equivalent diploma worth at least 300 ECTS) in Software engineering or related discipline;
  • Ideally, a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in software development. Newly graduated students are invited to apply as well;
  • Excellent skills in Python programming, object-oriented software architecture and quality assurance;
  • Experience in the field of distributed control systems and software design;
  • Experience in fast data acquisition and hardware synchronization are a strong asset.

Permanent contract.

The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
