AWE is looking for Mechanical Design Engineers to contribute to the delivery of Orion, our petawatt laser facility. Come and flex your engineering knowledge to help us design and develop leading-edge laser systems and associated experimental equipment. As a Mechanical Design Engineer in the Orion facility, you'll have proven mechanical design experience coupled with sound engineering judgement. Ideally, you'll have strong practical skills gained from working in a scientific research and development environment. Location - Reading area (on-site role)

Package - £33,850 - £50,800 pa (depending on your suitability and level of experience)

What will you be responsible for?

  • Contributing to the conceptual design, detail design, manufacture, assembly, and test of equipment
  • Contributing to the production and delivery of technical documents, reports, and presentations including specifications, design reviews, operational documents, and validation evidence for the engineering solutions
  • Identifying and supporting opportunities for cost savings, efficiency, and business improvement
  • Providing support to Senior Engineers in scoping, planning, and estimating future activities

To apply for this role, candidates should be able to demonstrate the following:

  • A HNC/HND or Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar discipline, e.g. Aerospace or Motorsport Engineering)
  • Practical engineering experience, ideally combined with the use and knowledge of machine tools
  • A good understanding of mechanical engineering theory and practice, with a broad knowledge of engineering design and manufacture
  • Design experience of machinery/mechanisms - Ideally supported by experience working with optical systems and/or vacuum technology
  • Experience of 3D modelling and detail drafting including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing - ideally using Siemens NX (training will be given when necessary)
  • Experience of managing small engineering projects and delivering to Quality, Time, and Cost
  • A good knowledge of Quality Systems in a highly regulated industry (desirable)
  • Good interpersonal skills, ability to work independently but also within a team, supporting colleagues to achieve the teams' goals
  • Strong communication skills (written and oral)
  • Strong organisational and problem-solving skills

Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role.
