Job Details

TRIUMF is Canada's particle accelerator centre, and one of the world's leading laboratories for particle and nuclear physics and accelerator-based science. We are an international centre for discovery and innovation, advancing fundamental, applied, and interdisciplinary research for science, medicine, and business.

At TRIUMF, we’re passionate about accelerating discovery and innovation to improve lives and build a better world. Equity, diversity, and inclusion are integral to excellence and enhance our ability to create knowledge and opportunity for all. Together, we are committed to building an inclusive culture that encourages, supports, and celebrates the voices of our employees, students, partners, and the people and communities we serve.

TRIUMF is the lead institution for ALPHA-Canada, the Canadian group in the international ALPHA experiment located at CERN. The ALPHA program currently includes precision antihydrogen spectroscopy with the ALPHA-2 apparatus and an antimatter gravity measurement with the ALPHA-g apparatus. ALPHA-Canada plays a significant role in various aspects of the experiment, including particle detection, microwave spectroscopy, laser cooling/spectroscopy, and plasma and atom trapping. ALPHA-Canada has constructed major components of the apparatus at TRIUMF and is also leading the ambitious new HAICU project to develop quantum sensing techniques applicable to antimatter physics.

We are currently seeking a tenure-track Research Scientist to join the group and provide scientific leadership in the field of fundamental symmetry tests with antihydrogen. In collaboration with university and international partners, the successful candidate is expected to make leading contributions to the ALPHA research program, and train students and postdocs. We require the candidate to have skills in one or more areas relevant to the ALPHA program; they include the development and operation of antihydrogen detectors (including hardware development, data acquisition, software, simulations, machine-learning analyses), microwave techniques (hyperfine spectroscopy, magnetometry), laser cooling and precision spectroscopy (UV and VUV lasers, metrology), antimatter traps (cryostats, Penning traps, superconducting magnetic traps), as well as emerging quantum techniques (atomic fountains, atomic clocks, atom interferometers). In the longer term, she/he/they are also encouraged to develop new initiatives furthering TRIUMF’s fundamental physics program. Opportunities exist for developing synergies with the growing activities in precision/quantum measurements at TRIUMF, including those at the ARIEL/ISAC and ultracold neutron facilities.

Applicants for this position must possess:

  • A strong background, training, and PhD in particle, nuclear, atomic or plasma physics
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills
  • Effective presentation and planning skills
  • Effective problem solving and experimental strategy skills
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Excellent relationship building skills, and the ability to function effectively in a team environment

This is a full time TRIUMF Board Appointed tenure-track appointment and is considered equivalent to a faculty position at a Canadian university. TRIUMF offers a comprehensive benefits package and a competitive starting salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position is located at the TRIUMF campus in Vancouver. This appointment will be at the equivalent rank of an Assistant Professor, but in exceptional cases other levels can be considered.

All qualified applicants will be given serious consideration, and in the case of equal qualifications, preference will be given to a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident.

TRIUMF is located on the south campus of the University of British Columbia, in the heart of Pacific Spirit Park in Vancouver, BC.  We offer a competitive total compensation package, including comprehensive benefits, attractive salary, and an excellent opportunity to enhance your career portfolio in a high-profile national research facility.

TRIUMF is an equal opportunity employer, and we welcome applications from all qualified candidates.
