Pay Range

$178,410 - $240,384 Annually for the SES.4 level

$214,050 - $288,432 Annually for the SES.5 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

The Generative Unconstrained Intelligent Drug Engineering (GUIDE) project, in the Biological Science and Security Program (BSS), has an opening for Project Engineer that will provide administrative and technical leadership for GUIDE activities. You will design, maintenance, testing, software engineering (as appropriate), administration, and general fielding of complex information systems to track budgets, schedules, deliverables and to forecast changes that milestones when sponsor-approved work changes occur.

Other areas of responsibility include recruitment, staffing, resource allocation, managing group performance and being part of the GUIDE leadership team. This position is in the Global Security Directorate.

In this role you will

 

 

  • Formulate and execute short-term and long-term strategic goals for the GUIDE Project.
  • Develop requirements, designs, project scope, costs, schedule, and risk plan to field and execute the project.
  • Provide technical guidance, leadership, and supervision to team members in the execution of their work scope with a focus on defining, developing, and deploying critical systems and components consistent with schedule and budget commitments.
  • Procure programmatic equipment and utility installation contracts, work closely with vendors and supply chain management (procurement).
  • Set broad development/project vision and strategy and influence technical direction for self and others working with the GUIDE team.
  • Maintain and help to ensure quality standards for deliverables, publications, and presentations; leverage team members’ skills to successfully complete the deliverables, by ensuring excellence in execution of technical work within the project.
  • Develop innovative capabilities to increase the impact of LLNL and lead the development of project portfolios, by successfully utilizing existing work, internal resources, and partnerships.
  • Provide training, mentoring, and coaching to group personnel and prepare and present written and verbal presentations of technical work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Assess strategic technical needs for development of supporting research and investments in technology infrastructure; lead technical initiatives in advancing state of the art engineering capabilities.
  • Champion major impact projects and multi-disciplinary efforts to positively impact the team’s long-term goals and objectives.
  • Represent the Laboratory to the sponsor and stakeholders and serve on external scientific/technical committees and act as senior technical expert on the project.

 


Qualifications

 

 

 

 

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE (Q)-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field or equivalent combination of education and extensive related knowledge and experience and ability to champion, lead, develop creative cutting-edge solutions, principles theories, and concepts.
  • Substantial experience developing and implementing creative solutions to a diverse range of highly complex problems and leading corrective actions where necessary.
  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors with the ability to overcome setbacks and resolve conflict in a positive and constructive manner.
  • Extensive experience championing large dynamic projects and multi-laboratory efforts that positively affected the organization’s long-term goals and objectives.
  • Extensive experience with the implementation of Laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Ability to be highly flexible and adapt to changes that are a result of changes in programmatic direction and LLNL policies.
  • Substantial experience interacting and cooperating with all levels of technical staff, managers, and vendors.
  • Leadership skills to lead and manage small, multi-disciplinary teams.

 


Additional qualifications at the SES.5 level

 

 

 

 

  • Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or Materials Engineering.
  • Extensive experience leveraging existing work, internal resources, and partnerships that resulted in successfully developing new project portfolios.
  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills, necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.

 


Qualifications We Desire

• An active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top-Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.

• Knowledge and experience with outside sponsors in DOE, DHS, DOD or other government or private sector organizations.

• Broad experience in a variety of Laboratory Programs.
