Pay Range

$160,590.00 - $206,220.00 Annually for the SEL.3 level

$192,660.00 - $247,416.00 Annually for the SEL.4 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for a Project Leader for Laser Isotope Separation. You will be responsible for delivering the design, development, installation, and commissioning the Laser Isotope Separator System in partnership with multiple funding agencies and programmatic staff across the laboratory while managing a detailed schedule to ensure delivery on time to support the program. Travel in support of programmatic deliverables may be required. This position is in support of Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) Program initiatives and will be in the Weapons Technologies and Engineering (WTE) program, in Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED) within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Provide the laser isotope separation project with leadership in project engineering and management, design development, product realization and qualification of the overall system.
  • Lead and manage cross-organizational engagements with other technical stakeholders, LLNL Superblock facilities and operations personnel, safety disciplines and any other stakeholders deemed necessary.
  • Direct and assign work to development and implementation team members and remain cognizant of the technical goals, workload balances, and progress of group projects.
  • Define, track, and complete project objectives as defined with NA-ESH-12 on time and within budget in collaboration with other essential LLNL support personnel. Monitor performance required to meet programmatic milestones and deliverables. Engage to correct deficiencies and lead corrective actions where necessary.
  • Represent the project team at meetings, briefings, and committee activities both internal and external to the Laboratory.
  • Ensure that project risks and requirements are communicated in an effective and timely manner to program leadership and reported upon in accordance with NA-191 Project Control Plans.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Additional job responsibilities, at the SEL.4 level

  • Influence strategic technical decisions made by program management and external customers based on project component domain expertise.
  • Mentor staff across the project. Advise across the program as an expert in optical design engineering, product realization, certification, and qualification work.
  • Serve as program spokesperson to Laboratory management and/or peers in the Nuclear Security Enterprise.


Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Master’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in Optical Engineering, Physics, or related field.
  • Advanced knowledge of and significant experience with at least one optical design software package (CODE V, Zemax, FRED, OSLO), including a thorough understanding of geometrical optics and lens design principles and an ability to interpret complex optical and mechanical specifications.
  • Experience interfacing with customer product requirements related to optical specification and production techniques while working under limited direction.
  • Experience with optical design standards, the Engineering Lifecycle Management (ELM) system, and document control.
  • Advanced communication, facilitation, negotiation, and collaboration skills, necessary to present, explain, mediate, compromise, and advise program management and/or external sponsors on advanced technical topics.
  • Ability to promote and maintain productive relationships across the project team.
  • Experience working independently and responsively to changing priorities and ability to meet deadlines and keep management well informed.


Additional qualifications at the SEL.4 level

  • Ability to develop highly complex optical and mechanical specifications based on physics requirements.
  • Strong track record of successfully delivering highly complex laser based optical systems in a national laboratory or industry setting.
  • Expert-level ability to develop and apply technical industry best practices and business principles to engineering projects, and to use independent judgment and initiative to work towards objectives in a self-directed manner, as well as lead in a team environment providing deliverables on cost and schedule.
  • Ability to understand laser performance related physics to aid in the development of optimal optical designs.
  • Effective skills for leading, mentoring, and managing small, multidisciplinary teams and influencing management and customers to meet critical system performance milestones.

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
