Come and rediscover your passion for quantum computing. Promote sustainability and create new knowledge. And, alongside world-leading scientists and technologists, shape projects that improve lives and daily life, in the UK and far beyond.

Put Simply, come and discover the impact you can make when you're equipped, encouraged, and inspired to perform to your very best.

Who are we?

The National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) is a new research institution, funded through UK Research and Innovation, which is dedicated to accelerating the development of quantum computing by addressing the challenges of scaling up the technology. The Centre will work with businesses, government and the research community to deliver quantum computing capabilities for the UK and support the growth of the emerging industry. The NQCC will give assured and direct access to early prototype machines for developers and promote the formation of a strong UK-based quantum computing supply chain.

A purpose-built facility for the NQCC, which is due to open in 2023, will be located at Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire.. The NQCC will sit alongside other departments within the STFC National Laboratories and is part of the wider National Quantum Technologies Programme (NQTP). The NQCC is a joint initiative of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC).

What's the purpose of this role?We are recruiting for an analog applications and benchmarking specialist to work with the latest neutral atomic and photonic NISQ hardware, supporting NQCC core objectives to develop, deliver and leverage these emerging technologies.

You will benchmark next generation analog quantum computing hardware, discovering new applications, and driving the UK quantum computing ecosystem toward quantum advantage. You will interface directly with hardware specialists within NQCC to assess the performance of the latest analog hardware and to bring reliable, cutting-edge analog applications within reach of UK end users.

You will develop and test scalable end-user applications for analog quantum computing in the NISQ era and beyond. Acting as an advocate for analog QC as an emerging technology in the UK, you will attend relevant national/International meetings as required.

What experience do I need?

We offer significant development opportunities at the NQCC, but as a starting point you should be able to demonstrate some of the following;

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent relevant experience in physics or a related field
  • Experience with analog quantum computing. (Experience of working with quantum algorithms is acceptable at partial credit)
  • Experience of using relevant quantum programming languages to program quantum computers (real or emulated)
  • Experience working in a R&D or laboratory environment
  • Demonstrable track record of research in the field, which may include peer-reviewed publications

You would need to be available to occasionally travel/work within the UK and overseas when required.

Benefits:

Choosing to come to work at UKRI means that you will have access to a whole host of benefits including a flexible working scheme, a Career Average Revalued Earnings pension scheme, 30 days annual leave allowance, access to employee shopping/travel discounts and salary sacrifice cycle to work scheme.

Company

STFC imageAt the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), research is driven by practical applications and a curiosity to create a world-leading hub of scientific and engineering excellence. Our science and facilities enable researchers to answer fundamental questions about the nature of the universe. Success typically requires long-term strategic investment, international collaboration on a global scale and the capability to push the limits of technology and engineering. To remain internationally competitive in our areas of science and to keep our facilities at the leading edge, we have to develop bespoke technology that cannot be reliably sourced on the open market, for example in detectors and instrumentation, accelerators, specialist engineering, optics and e-infrastructure. These technologies are often also applied to address broader societal and industrial challenges and we actively promote their translation and commercialization.

Why work for us
When you join STFC, you become a key part of one of Europe’s largest research organizations. We are trusted to support, enable, and undertake cutting-edge projects in an amazing diversity of fields that you could be a part of. With access to our world-class facilities, people like you are helping us to drive ground-breaking advances in science, engineering, computing and technology.
