Pay Range
$136,500 - $210,288 Annually
$136,500 - $175,272 Annually for the TSS.3 level
$163,740 - $210,288 Annually for the TSS.4 level

Job Description
We are looking for a Nuclear Facility Configuration Engineer to oversee physical changes to nuclear facilities, guiding projects from initial request through construction and into startup. The work is fast-paced and directly supports both public safety and research critical to national security. Our team is diverse and multi-disciplinary, united by passion for helping others bring projects to completion and for expanding our own capabilities and technical skills. Our ideal candidate for this position is a critical thinker with an analytical, creative, big-picture mindset, is fulfilled by using their expert knowledge to streamline work and empower colleagues, and delights in accurate, organized data and documentation.
Candidates with a design and construction background in mechanical engineering (HVAC, piping systems, assembly lines), electrical engineering (power distribution, control systems), structural engineering (seismic, civil structures), nuclear engineering (nuclear safety, reactor systems), or engineering quality assurance are especially encouraged to apply.
This position is assigned to the Superblock complex (a collection of four nuclear research facilities) in the Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) Directorate.
This position will be filled at either the TSS.3 or TSS.4 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

You will
- Lead the team that runs the Superblock change control process, guiding physical projects proposed by facility engineers and researchers from pitch to startup (requirement reviews, design reviews, work planning, construction, post-testing, drawing/document updates, and closeout).
- Monitor and adjust the change control process to improve the user experience: define and track metrics, identify and implement changes to the process, and direct the development and maintenance of a change database.
- Take a personal role in improving the quality and usefulness of facility system documentation:
- locate historical, current, and draft (redline) documentation for users, using multiple document repositories including digital and hardcopy databases.
- track updates to critical system documentation (system design descriptions, data sheets, engineering drawings, P&IDs, panel schedules) made by engineers and drafters.
- periodically audit the accuracy of system documentation via field walkdowns
- Be the recognized expert for the Configuration Management program in Superblock, providing front-line direction and advice to Engineering, Maintenance, Operations, and research program leads on change control and documentation processes. Develop and lead training to facility workers as necessary.
- Promote and support plans to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the program.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities, at the TSS.4 level
- Serve as the deputy for the WCI Configuration Management Manager for all WCI nuclear and high-hazard operations, including supervisory and budget responsibility, strategic direction, representing the program to regulators, and other duties as assigned.
- Prepare and maintain key configuration management program documents, including institutional policies and facility certifications.
Qualifications
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor’s degree in a physical engineering discipline or similar technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and significant related experience.
- Advanced knowledge and significant experience participating in complex technical projects and handling multiple priorities and tasks with excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently with minimal direction as well as in a team. Ability to self-direct learning to develop new technical skills.
- Ability (including advanced facilitation and collaboration skills) to build relationships with stakeholders from other specialties or departments who may prioritize opposing business goals.
- Advanced communication skills necessary to deliver effective presentations or training, explain technical concepts, and create dashboards or reports to advise professional colleagues and/or mid-level management.
- Demonstrated ability/commitment to valuing diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in the workplace.
Additional qualifications at the TSS.4 level
- Prior experience in a supervisory capacity.
- Expert knowledge and experience creating and/or maintaining policy and procedure documents that govern the operation of a department, program, or process.
Qualifications We Desire
- Prior design and/or construction experience for U.S. government agencies (Department of Energy, Department of Defense), the U.S. military, or engineering/construction firms -especially experience related to nuclear facilities or nuclear vessels.
- Advanced knowledge of, and significant experience with, processes related to configuration management of physical systems, such as work control, change control, document control, design requirements and system assessments. (Familiarity with the configuration management requirements of DOE Order 420.1C, Facility Safety, and DOE-STD-1073-2016, Configuration Management, is a plus.)
- Significant experience with engineering documentation (drawings, P&IDs, system design descriptions) from multiple engineering disciplines for an operating facility or a facility under construction, ideally including field walkdowns.
- In-depth knowledge of practices related to safety basis or authorization basis documentation for non-reactor nuclear facilities (Documented Safety Analyses and Technical Safety Requirements).
- Experience with using and searching databases and creating database reports, especially for document management software and SharePoint document libraries. Experience with low-code programming such as automation workflows.
