Pay Range

$178,410.00 - $229,116.00 Annually for the SES.4 level

$214,050.00 - $274,908.00 Annually for the SES.5 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have multiple openings for Senior Project Engineers. You will provide subject matter expertise and technical leadership on new and ongoing projects for the National Ignition Facility and Photon Sciences (NIF&PS) Directorate. You will develop innovative high-power laser components and systems using advanced design and manufacturing techniques for scientific and defense applications. Typical projects require highly advanced systems engineering; engineering analysis and computational simulation; extreme precision and unique materials; prototype design; state of the art fabrication and assembly; and engineering testing and deployment. These positions are in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role, you will

 

 

  • Provide technical guidance, leadership, and supervision to team members in the execution of their work scope with a focus on defining, developing, and deploying critical systems and components consistent with schedule and budget commitments.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for precision engineering and process optimization.
  • Set broad development/project vision and strategy and influence technical direction for self and others.
  • Direct technical activities as needed to specify, procure, evaluate and deploy unique materials, coatings and form factors.
  • Maintain and ensure quality standards for deliverables, publications and presentations; leverage team members’ skills to successfully complete highly complex projects, by ensuring excellence in execution of technical work in the program.
  • Successfully utilize existing work, internal resources, and partnerships to develop innovative capabilities to increase the impact of LLNL and lead the development of project portfolios.
  • Provide training, mentoring, and coaching to group personnel and prepare and present written and verbal presentations of technical work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 


Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.5 level

 

 

 

 

  • Assess strategic technical needs for development of supporting research and investments in technology infrastructure; lead technical initiatives in advancing state of the art engineering capabilities.
  • Champion major impact projects and multi-disciplinary efforts to positively impact the team’s long-term goals and objectives.
  • Represent the Laboratory to the sponsor and stakeholders and serve on external scientific/technical committees and act as senior technical expert on large programs/projects.

 


Qualifications

 

 

 

 

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Engineering, or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
  • Subject matter expert knowledge in highly complex mechanical design and analysis and substantial experience in project planning and highly complex technical leadership.
  • Substantial experience developing and implementing creative solutions to a diverse range of highly complex problems and leading corrective actions where necessary.
  • Substantial experience in developing advanced high-performance thermal management systems, precision fabrication and assembly.
  • Extensive experience championing large dynamic projects and multi-laboratory efforts that positively affected the organization’s long-term goals and objectives.
  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to present, explain, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.
  • Substantial experience interacting and cooperating with all levels of technical staff, managers, and vendors.
  • Leadership skills to lead and manage small, multi-disciplinary teams.

 


Additional qualifications at the SES.5 level

 

 

 

 

  • Nationally recognized expertise in one or more of the following areas: precision engineering, advanced manufacturing, optomechanical systems, microtechnology, or thermal management systems.
  • Extensive experience leveraging existing work, internal resources, and partnerships that resulted in successfully developing new project portfolios.
  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.

 


Qualifications We Desire

 

 

 

 

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Engineering.
  • Successful track record of crafting new capabilities and catalyzing innovation to impact the long-term direction of an organization.
  • Experience in writing technical specifications and statements of work.
