Pay Range

$123,960 - $159,168 Annually.

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for a Materials Scientist to perform a full range of moderate to complex research in the area of material formulation and advanced manufacturing process development for energetic materials. You will actively participate with and be an integral member of an interdisciplinary team responsible for conducting and supporting research emphasizing the development and/or use of in-situ diagnostics, new Resodyn Acoustic Mixing (RAM), and other advanced manufacturing processes as well as associated data collection methodology and analysis, to build a core understanding of the process-performance trade space. This position is in the Rapid Materials Prototyping and Characterization Group within the Energetic Materials & Design (EMD) section of the Materials Science Division, supporting the Energetic Materials Center (EMC).

You will

• Conduct moderately complex to complex research in areas of design, synthesis, and characterization of energetic materials components and formulations.
• Participate in the design and development of new explosive formulations for a variety of applications directed by multiple investigators.
• Independently analyze and resolve formulation problems and establish solutions leading to materials which meet the desired scientific specifications or programmatic needs.
• Perform research guided by multiple primary investigators.
• Track and maintain careful documentation of experimental results.
• Communicate research progress to team members through presentations and internal reports.
• Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
• BS or MS in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials, polymers, pharmaceutical, food, or cosmetic science, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
• Broad laboratory experience in one of the above fields.
• Broad understand of basic materials characterization and formulations.
• Experience performing and/or designing experiments and documenting results.
• Ability to work independently on defined research projects as well as a member of a team.
• Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff within a collaborating research and development environment at LLNL.
• Willingness to train and become qualified to handle high explosives.

Qualifications We Desire

• Experience in a variety of energetic materials, including thermites and pyrotechnics.
• Experience with a variety of laboratory scale mixing and formulation methods, e.g., blade high-shear, LabRAM, speed-mixer, slurry coating, extrusion, and injection loading.
• Experience characterizing material properties such as viscosity, molecular weight, and glass transition temperatures.

Site 300

Site 300 is an experimental test site operated by LLNL. Situated on 7,000 acres in rural foothills approximately six miles southwest of downtown Tracy and 15 miles southeast of Livermore, Site 300 hosts approximately 200 employees with expertise in such fields as engineering, chemistry, biology, and environmental restoration. Employees assigned to work at Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis ).

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
