Pay Range

$123,960 - $190,932 Annually

$123,960 - $159,168 Annually for the SES.2 level

$148,650 - $190,932 Annually for the SES.3 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have multiple openings for highly qualified Engineers to join our interdisciplinary team of Systems Analysts supporting a variety of application areas addressing critical infrastructure, energy, and climate change related problems. As an Energy Technology & Policy Systems Analyst, you will support and lead projects spanning sustainable energy production, carbon removal and utilization. You will apply a combination of technical depth and breadth, critical thinking, modeling and simulation, and analysis to understand complex, often multi-domain problem areas to provide decision insight and communicate options and trade-offs in support of design, scale up and integration of the next generation of sustainable and secure energy systems. This position is in the Computational Engineering Division (CED).

In this role you will

  • Research, design and optimize systems that leverage efficient energy technologies and carbon drawdown approaches from initial concept and design to scale up and demonstration.
  • Perform techno-economic and life cycle assessments to compare the economic and environmental impacts of climate mitigation technologies and/or energy systems and optimize the system parameters to improve the cost and carbon footprint over the current state-of-the-art options.
  • Apply engineering knowledge to evaluate a broad range of technology performance and costs tradeoffs of early-stage energy technologies.
  • Participate in complex projects that demonstrate carbon drawdown and energy resilience in the field.
  • Design computational tools to optimize the logistic network of resource supply and product distribution at regional and national scales.
  • Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of original research to address defined problems.
  • Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
  • Communicate the importance and results of climate mitigation R&D to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Balance multiple projects/tasks and priorities of customers and partners to ensure deadlines are met, while working independently with minimal direction within the scope of the assignment.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present results at conferences, seminars, and meetings.
  • Travel as required to coordinate research with collaborators and visit field sites.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.3 level

  • Lead multidisciplinary technical teams in executing projects and tasks while balancing priorities of customers and partners to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Develop creative growth opportunities through interactions with current and potential sponsors and creation of proposals.

Qualifications

  • PhD in an energy focused field including disciplines such as Energy Resource Engineering, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science, Physical Sciences or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge and experience in one or more relevant topical areas including energy systems, lifecycle assessment, technoeconomic analysis, energy technology commercialization and/or quantitative energy policy analysis.
  • Experience developing and applying quantitative tools such as computational models or simulations that leverage a variety of data sources to inform energy or energy policy analyses.
  • Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills to develop creative solutions to complex problems.
  • Experience working with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and project managers to develop and apply these capabilities to inform engineering decisions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information to a variety of audiences.

Additional qualifications at the SES.3 level

  • Demonstrated subject matter expertise in multiple relevant areas including energy systems, lifecycle assessment, technoeconomic analysis, energy technology commercialization and/or quantitative energy policy analysis.
  • Demonstrated advanced analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills to develop creative solutions to complex problems.
  • Demonstrated expertise in leading diverse, technical teams to execute ill defined projects.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Hands on engineering experience with pilot, demonstration, or commercial scale engineering projects.
  • Experience in technology commercialization.
  • Knowledge and experience in carbon accounting and environmental regulations.
  • Knowledge and experience in carbon utilization.
