Postdoc "KRANOS: K40 Radiation for Advanced Neuroimaging Of Stroke"

Limited: 2 years | Starting date: earliest possible | ID: FHPO004/2021 | Deadline: 23.01.2022 | Full‑time/Part‑time

DESY, with its more than 2700 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

Among the afflictions that a human brain can suffer, stroke and traumatic brain injuries list among the most severe, both for fatality and longterm implications for survivors. To date diagnostic systems are expensive and can accurately identify strokes only some time after symptoms onset. This research project, which is financed by the DESY Generator program (DGP), aims to develop a novel, completely non-invasive highlyportable low-cost brain damage detection system based on the detection of the potassium distribution in the brain. The purpose of the DGP-program is to help DESY technologies with high application potential achieving developmental milestones and advancing to the marketplace. We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join the KRANOS team within the detectors group of the astroparticle division (campus Zeuthen) and to work in close collaboration with Innovation & Technology Transfer (ITT).

About your role:

  • Geant-4 and C++ based software development of prototype simulations of the detector
  • Monte Carlo simulation implementation of the whole setup, creation of simplified setups to emulate brain potassium emission (e.g. from existing MRI literature)
  • Detector design development (geometry, hardware components, cost-effectiveness) algorithms development for imaging reconstruction
  • Algorithms development for imaging reconstruction
  • Strategic and conceptional work for the transfer of the technology to the market

About you:

  • Ph.D. in medical physics or particles physics or fields related to the detection of low-energy gamma rays or equivalent qualification
  • Very good knowledge of C++ and montecarlo simulation methods. Geant-4 knowledge is an advantage
  • Good understanding of particle detectors systems and in particular of the physics of low-energy gamma rays
  • Good skills in data analysis are an advantage
  • Ideally, experience in interdisciplinary work and cooperation with scientific or industrial partners
  • Strong motivation, excellent research independence, good knowledge of English
  • Technology-transfer focused mindset

Good reasons to join:

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. We attach particular importance to appreciative cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time and job-sharing. You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH.
