Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to lead the development of a new capability in the Electromagnetic Protection Group within the Coordinated Countermeasure Effects Team!

You will be in charge of developing the Integrated Survivability capability that will bring together Science and Technology across the domains. The purpose is to develop coordinated countermeasure solutions, including those delivered from third-party bearers, which protects platforms (think Ships, Planes, Vehicles) from hostile action when operating in complex and connected multi-sensor threat environments; includes the use of other mission level enablers.

The initial focus will in the Air domain with aspirations to pull the capability through for Maritime.

The successful candidate will seek to understand the key challenges facing our customers based on understanding platform protection, the threat environment, and the likely nature of future military operations in order to lead, influence and develop research proposals and activities that provide advice to address those challenges.

You will be required to advise colleagues in the Military and Defence procurement on platform countermeasure solutions. Collaboration with equivalent project and capability teams from across our International Partners will be key to success. Experience in technical leadership (particularly at a systems level) and familiarity with countermeasure concepts will enable you to drive our hardworking team in delivering high impact advice for our UK defence.

Job description

In this role you will:

  • Develop & sustain capability (people relationships, infrastructure, knowledge, licences to practice) to provide technical/scientific contribution to current and future projects across Dstl
  • Provide timely, impartial, evidence-based advice to customers to enable them to make informed decisions representing the best platform protection and value for investment.
  • Support Project Managers in development of research and procurement plans for platform countermeasures through provision of technical advice.
  • Support the coordinated countermeasure effects technical capability principal (the senior specialist in the field) in planning, delivering and reporting on research and operational advice.
  • Identify resource requirements for effective technical delivery of project plans and work with Team Leaders to assign tasks to technical staff;

You will be working within a team of ~14 and reporting to a Team Leader. The team sits within a group of ~90 electromagnetic scientists and engineers. Teams work across multiple projects and as a senior or principal scientist, you will typically play a leading role on 1-2 projects and provide advice and consultancy into other related projects/activities.

Dstl is strongly encouraging blended and flexible working either at one of our sites or from home or both. You may be required to travel to other Dstl and MoD sites as required.

Responsibilities

We are looking for people who have some of the following:

  • Existing knowledge of Systems Engineering practices
  • A good understanding in either Electro Optic or Radio Frequency technology
  • The drive to build a capability from the ground up and develop networks across the MOD, Military, industry and international partners to inspire changes in the countermeasure development cycle
  • To think strategically and link multiple projects together into delivering a core theme.
  • An ability to quickly develop good working relationships with a variety of people

Our work in defence, security and intelligence requires our employees to be UK Nationals who are able to gain a high level of security clearance to undertake the projects we are involved in to protect us from security threats. This role will require full UK security clearance and you should have resided in the UK for the past 5 years. For some roles Developed Vetting will also be required, in this case you should have resided in the UK for the past 10 years.

There will be some lab based and field trials in the UK and overseas. Any offsite working will be managed with the Team Leader in consideration of personal commitments. Flexible working hours are fully supported within the needs of the business.

Qualifications

Essential
BSc/BEng level qualifications in a STEM-based degree
Desirable
Masters or PhD level qualifications in a physics or engineering based degree
Chartered Engineer or Physicist
