Job Details

Location: South Kensington and White City

Full-Time, Fixed Term appointment until 30th June 2023 with a possibility of an extension

Research and develop spin-defect materials (e.g. nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond and silicon-vacancy centres in silicon carbide) in order to develop masers and other quantum devices. You will gain experience in the characterisation of spin-defects in diamond and related materials using pulsed optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and with advanced imaging and spectroscopy techniques. The project will take place as part of a 5-year collaboration with the University of Manchester and the University of Leeds and will ideally suit an applicant with strong experimental, computational and theoretical skills.

Duties and responsibilities

  • To develop optical & microwave experiments for characterisation of quantum properties of spin-defects.
  • To characterise spin-defects in diamond and related materials using advanced imaging and spectroscopy techniques.
  • To carry out simulations and experiments characterising how interactions between spin-defects and nuclear spins might be used as part of a quantum memory.
  • To design, fabricate and characterise diamond maser devices and experiments.
  • To take initiative in the planning of research.
  • To conduct data analysis and ensure validity of data at all times.
  • To plan and carry out research in accordance with the project aims.

Essential requirements

  • Hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials or Physical Chemistry
  • Experience with optical experimentation and spectroscopy
  • Experience with programming in Python (preferably) or similar languages
  • Awareness of trends in quantum computing, quantum sensing and other quantum technologies.
  • Understanding of quantum optics and physics of spin defects

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £36,694- £39,888 per annum.
