Postdoctoral Research Associate (fixed-term)

Department: Physics

Salary: Starting from £37,099, rising to £44,263

Grade: Grade 7

Closing date: Tuesday 26 September 2023

The Department of Physics is looking to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate for an 18 month, fixed-term period.

About the role:

This position, created for the UK’s National Quantum Technologies Programme, will develop fibre-based devices for quantum technology, with emphasis on squeezed light generation. We envisage these devices will play a central role in future fibre optic quantum networks and related quantum technologies.

Your role will be primarily experimental (with related theory) and will involve working in our cutting-edge fibre fabrication facility and quantum photonics laboratories.

You will develop desirable new skills including designing and manufacturing micro structured fibres and working with innovative quantum light sources.

The role will deliver potential for research impact including publications in prestige journals, international conference travel and technology commercialisation.

You will take a senior role in shaping the academic footprint of a newly established group, with opportunities both to break new ground and influence the direction of future research.

This position therefore provides an exceptional opportunity to gain experience towards achieving research independence.

The term of the position is 18 months with potential for extension.

About you:

A PhD in experimental (quantum) physics or a closely allied discipline is essential.

Strong skills in laser laboratory work, theoretical understanding, and innovativeness in a research context are also critical.

Prior experience working with optical fibre and familiarity with electronics is desirable but not necessary.

Further info:

The Centre for Photonics and Photonic Materials is a highly collaborative and inclusive community of 40 researchers and students in the Department of Physics, University of Bath.

Featuring one of the UK's few research-grade fibre fabrication facilities, it has internationally leading status in the field of specialty optical fibres, including photonic crystal fibre.

The Centre features a rapidly growing cluster of researchers engaged in the field of quantum photonic technology. We welcome all eligible applicants.

What we can offer you:

  • a very generous employer contributory pension scheme;
  • generous annual leave allowance with an additional 5 discretionary days so that you can enjoy a positive work life balance;
